What are Dental Implants?

As the gold standard of tooth replacement among experts, dental implants do more than restore the look of a healthy smile. They offer patients a chance for better oral and overall health by replacing the roots as well as the crowns of teeth. This reduces the chance of bone resorption over time, helping to not only keep facial features in place but more importantly, minimize the potential for additional tooth loss.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Receiving dental implants is a multi-step process that often requires six months to one year to complete. While each patient undergoing treatment will not have the same plan, the following steps will be required:

  • Initial Consultation: Our team will begin by evaluating you for treatment. Using digital, high-resolution imaging and a visual examination, we will determine if you require additional services, like gum disease treatment, bone grafting, tooth extraction, etc. before having dental implants put in place.
  • Dental Implant Surgery: We perform dental implant surgery in-house, so you will remain with our team as we place each implant into your jawbone. You will feel no discomfort because of the local anesthesia you will receive.
  • Osseointegration and Abutment: Once the surgery is complete, you will experience what is known as osseointegration, which is the fusing of your implant posts with your jawbone. This creates a stable foundation for your new tooth or set of teeth. This process takes between 4-6 months before you can have your metal abutments applied. These are small connectors that attach to your implant and hold your restoration in place.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration: During your consultation, we will determine if you require a crown, bridge, or denture. Along the way, we will capture an impression of your mouth so that a custom restoration can be made to complete your smile. We’ll secure it to your abutments during this final stage of treatment, allowing you to begin experiencing life with a functional, healthy, and beautiful smile.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Dental implants are known to last 30+ years; however, some cases report a longer lifespan.
  • You can eat the foods you love because of the improved bite quality they provide, resulting in fewer, if any, food restrictions.
  • These prosthetics stimulate the jawbone much like natural tooth roots, so there is a lower risk of additional tooth and bone loss.
  • Dental implants are easy to maintain, as you clean them just like you do your natural teeth.
